South Iredell runs over East Davidson

TROUTMAN | There was no letdown this year.
Keyed by running back Cameron Mattox’s dominant performance, South Iredell whipped East Davidson 47-6 in the first round of the 2-AA state playoffs Friday night.
“We’ll enjoy this for a few hours and then get ready for a tough matchup,” Vikings coach Scott Miller said.
South Iredell (12-0) will host Forest Hills (8-4) in the second round. It’s a rematch of last season’s first-round game. Forest Hills won 31-30 on a touchdown and two-point conversion in the final six seconds, handing the Vikings their only loss after an 11-0 regular season.
Punter Kadarrell Boler didn’t make an appearance until the third quarter Friday, and when he did, he got off a 49-yard boot.
It was that kind of night for the Vikings. They scored on their first seven possessions, including all six in the first half.
Mattox finished with 150 yards and five touchdowns on 15 carries.
Michael Fisher’s 80-yard interception return set up Mattox’s fourth touchdown run of the first half. He scored from 2 yards out six seconds before intermission, punctuating 40 unanswered points by the Vikings to close the first half.
Mattox piled up 100 yards on 11 carries in the opening 24 minutes, including scoring runs of 48, 5, 10 and 2 yards. The senior’s 62-yard TD reception from Adrian Whitener after South Iredell’s defense stopped the Golden Eagles on downs gave the Vikings a 32-6 advantage with 3:43 remaining in the half.
Quataye Smyre also hauled in a 14-yard TD pass from Whitener, who finished 7 of 11 passing for 135 yards and two scores.
Mattox tacked on a 20-yard TD run on the Vikings’ first possession of the second half.
South Iredell’s defense, led by linebacker Scottie Miller, held East Davidson to 172 yards with 42 of those came on its opening-drive score. The Golden Eagles gained a short field after a failed onside kick and used 13 methodical plays and over six minutes of clock to reach the end zone on Michael Ramos’ 2-yard jaunt.
Ramos amassed 130 yards on 30 carries to lead East Davidson (4-8).
Leading 47-6, early in the third quarter, Coach Miller turned to his reserves to keep his starters fresh for the second round.
“We got everybody on the roster in tonight,” he said. “It was a great effort by everybody.”
