Salisbury girls outrun West

The Salisbury point guard’s name is Doreen Richardson –– no doubt the West Davidson Green Dragons will remember it because they were seeing her racing ahead of them all night long.

Richardson scored a career best 29 points in the Hornets’ 81-59 victory.

Richardson dazzled with open-court steals and fast-break layups to go with her now patented jump-stop pull-ups in the lane.
“I can’t believe I scored that many,” she said.

“I always think of myself as a pass first player but I guess I have been working hard on my jump-stop and and it’s paying off.”
Salisbury’s other star, Brielle Blaire, also did her part by pouring in 28.

The Hornets really didin’t begin to stretch out the lead until the second half as a scrappy bunch of Dragons only trailed 37-24 at the break.

West Davidson’s valiant effort was spearheaded by freshman Callie Herman.

She turned in a 20 point night and wasn’t flustered at all by the taller, more athletic Hornets.

“It felt really good for us to play them so close in the early going,” Herman said. “The 20 points feels great but my teammates had as much to do with it as I did and we definitely would rather have the win but we will be better from playing them like this.”

West Davidson head coach David Klinkoski echoed Herman’s sentiments of pride.

“To be down by only eight in the second half at one point to an atheltic and great team like Salisbury is really a testament to these girls’ work ethics,” he said. “Without the turnovers that we committed, I think it could have been a different game, but the final score was definitely not indicative of how competitive it was out there tonight and I’m proud of all of my girls.”

West visits Lexington on Tuesday.
