Central boys pound East

Central Davidson’s boys came into Friday night’s home game with East Davidson on somewhat of a downward swing.
The Spartans certainly picked it up against the Eagles.

Chris Pompey shot and sliced his way to 20 points, and the Spartans held East big man Taylor Booze to just six en route to an easy 65-41 victory. Forrest Reynolds, who finished with 12 points, nailed two 3-pointers in the pivotal second quarter that saw Central turn a one-point lead into a blowout.

“We really worked on our defense yesterday, we had a really good practice,” Central coach Brian Hege said. “Tonight we ran our sets very well, very crisp, we moved the ball real well. Got it inside, and we shot the ball better tonight than we have been.”

Indeed. Greg Mininni converted several rebounds and post moves into 12 points, and Will Ramsey showed a nice stroke to the tune of 12 points of his own.

But the Eagles put up little resistance. “Central had a lot more to play for, they’re still playing for second place,” East coach Matt Jacobs said. "We just allowed them to be a lot more competitive than we were.

“Central played a lot harder than we did, and a lot better than we did.”

That was a far cry for the first two meeting these two teams had, splitting two one-point games that came down to the wire. Reynolds nailed a deep 3-ball to spark a 13-3 Central run to close the first half. John Hanes hit two jumpers in the burst, and Pompey followed another Reynolds trey with a 3 from the corner at the buzzer. East never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Blake Loman and Josh Craven paced the Eagles with nine points apiece. East, now 1-7 in the CCC, 5-15 overall, hosts West Davidson on Tuesday. Central, which improved to 5-3, 16-5, welcomes Lexington on Tuesday.
