South girls run streak to nine games

Another slow start saw the North Rowan girls dig a hole they couldn’t climb out of Friday at South Davidson.

South got big shots on its first two possessions of the fourth quarter that guided it to a 49-37 victory against North, who sits in fifth place in the YVC and out of a playoff spot with two league games remaining.

“We’re still missing some layups down the stretch that we should be hitting,” North coach Tony Hillian said.

Teaunna Cuthbertson hit back-to-back shots from the field to bring North to within 29-28 late in the third quarter. South’s Madi Beeson  hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Wildcats some good momentum going into the final eight minutes.

It carried over as Madison Sigmon, scoreless coming into the quarter, canned a 3 and hit a jumper inside the arc on consecutive possessions for a 36-30 lead. It was the ninth straight win for South (15-6, 12-2), and the Wildcats remained in a tie atop the YVC standings.

“We really missed too many shots in the first half,” South coach Fonda Jackson said. “If someone went cold, someone else picked it up.”

Tinka Bush’s three-point play drew North within 38-35, but Addie Grubb hit a dagger on a 3 from the corner on the ensuing possession as North (8-12, 8-6) never got any closer.

Cuthbertson and Bush each scored 10 points for the Cavs. Hunter Sigmon led all scorers with 12 points.

The Wildcats held an 8-4 lead after one quarter and a 15-14 lead at halftime. Cuthbertson nailed a turnaround jumper to tie the score at 19 and Brown tied it at 21 moments later. Holly Wall hit a shot to put the Wildcats up for keeps at 23-21.
