Lexington girls cruise past Spartans

Lexington’s girls bolted to a 12-6 lead after one quarter, and Central never could fight back as the Jackets rolled to a 56-43 Central Carolina Conference win at Central on Tuesday.

Jasmine Carter scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the decisive first quarter, and Alexis Fowler pumped in 15 for the Jackets. The post tandem was simply too much for the Spartans to handle.

“I think we create problems for anybody that doesn’t have two big people,” Lexington coach Lamont Johnson said. “Once we get those two big ones going and our guards start hitting, we’re pretty competitive.”

Central coach Kevin Hudson couldn’t understand why his team wasn’t more competitive than it was, missing a bushel full of layups and free throws. “The layup thing just blows my mind,” Hudson said. “I don’t understand. We work on those type of shots every day.

“Sometimes you’re on, sometimes you’re off. I guess tonight was our night to be off.”

Chariti Wall fed Fowler in the post, then scored on a fast break to give the Jackets a 22-10 lead late in the second quarter.

McKenzie Burkhart keyed a Central run that made it 24-19 momentarily, but D’Necia Ausborne nailed a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to push Lexington back in front 27-19 at the half. The Spartans never seriously threatened after the intermission.

Chandler Young led the Spartans with 18 points. Central, now 4-5 in the league, 13-8 overall, visits West Davidson on Friday, Lexington, which improved to 5-4, 11-10, welcomes Thomasville on Friday.
