The North Davidson girls played undefeated Mount Tabor about as well as any team in the league before falling 54-40 in a game that was closer than the final score indicates.
“We played a pretty good game,” said North coach Kendra Puckett, whose team is now 3-6 in the conference, 7-14 overall. “We hustled, got in there and made some things happen.
“We just beat ourselves a little bit with turnovers.”
The Knights seemed to be on the verge of getting blown down several times in the game, but never went away. With four minutes left to play in the game, the Knights trailed 43-35, and then 48-39 with 2:33 left to play.
The game might have been decided in the first period. The Knights fell behind 16-7 and had to play from behind the rest of the way.
“The first quarter did us in,” said Puckett. “We were open in several spots and just didn’t shoot it when we should have taken advantage of it and maybe it could have been a closer game. It was like we were afraid to shoot the ball.”
Puckett said the team is now focused on the regular-season finale at Davie County Friday with the aim of gearing up for the conference tournament.
“We’re fighting for third place right now,” said Puckett.
Samantha Honeycutt scored 17 points to lead the Knights. Ironically, her sister, Elaine, scored 17 points on her senior night against Mount Tabor in 1997.
Mount Tabor improved to 9-0 in the CPC, 23-0 overall.
