West girls’ coach David Klinkoski has been battling an illness all week. But a date with Randleman was just what the doctor ordered, as the Dragons rolled to a 69-46 win over the Tigers. West jumped out to a 15-10 lead after one, then dominated the second quarter and never looked back.
Callie Herman led the Dragons with 24 points and Emily Hutchinson totally controlled the paint en route to a 16-point performance.
That made Klinkoski feel a little bit better. “We did a good job dribble penetrating tonight,” he said. “The wings did a good job, and the post players did a good job of coming in pulling some rebounds.
“And we took care of the basketball; I think we had three turnovers in the first half.”
Herman closed the first quarter with a jumper from the elbow then, after Breanna Foster’s layup to open the second, Hutchinson followed a miss with an easy bucket inside. Herman drove the land for another easy score, then Alicia Middleton hit Hutchinson in the paint for an easy look. Middleton found Hutchinson in transition moments later, and Herman’s three-point play midway through the quarter made it 27-15.
The Tigers never recovered, especially after Foster — the point guard — left the game before the half following Herman’s inadvertent elbow to the head. West led 36-17 at the break, and Randleman couldn’t get within single digits in the second half.
Jordan Brown led the Tigers with 17 points.
West, now 2-3, hosts Ledford on Tuesday.
