2013 prep golf preview

Here is a look at the county prep golf teams:

West Davidson

Last year’s record: Second in the CCC, fourth in the region.

Key players lost: Jake Hartman.

Key players returning: Nathan Curry, Andrew Kahn, Austin Pleasants, Logan Herman.

Key newcomers: Matt Brittain, Zach Michael.

Conference: Central Carolina 2-A.

Outlook: Salisbury has won the last four CCC championships and Ledford (now in 3-A) won the four before that. But the Green Dragons, with their veteran team, could make a run at it in 2013.

Coach David Klinkoski says: “Our expectation is to hopefully compete for a conference championship which Salisbury has controlled for many years.  East is also going to be very strong since I believe they are returning all of their top 6. Going to states as a team is also always one of our goals.”

Last year’s record: Second in the MPC.

Key losses: Aaron Abts, Nathan Parks, Clint Bowman.

Key returnees: Cam Weis, Anthony Bradley, Brandon Shoaf, Ryan McClellan.

Key newcomers: Sam Sgroi, Trey Ragan, Zach Gilliam, Peter Hughes.

Conference: Mid-Piedmont 3-A.

Outlook: Ledford must make up for the loss of its three top golfers as the Panthers seek to chase Asheboro again in the MPC and get back to the 3-A state tournament for the first time since 2010.

Coach John Ralls says: “We’re trying. We’re trying to get a little better each day.”

Central Davidson

Last year: Fourth in the CCC.

Key returnees: Austen Mabe, Chris Crews, Chase Blankenship, Jacob Younts, Jon Ramsey.

Key newcomers: Austin Cooke, Cole Tysinger, Ryder McCain.

Conference: Central Carolina 2-A.

Outlook: The CCC is loaded with perennial power Salisbury, West Davidson and East Davidson expected to be strong. Mabe and Crews were regional qualifiers as individuals last year.

Coach Guhi’ Bowers says: “Hopefully we will gain experience and grow to lay the framework to once again compete with top teams as we move toward the transition to a new conference next year.”

East Davidson

Last year: Third in the CCC.

Key losses: None.

Key returnees: Justin Wood (all-CCC), Wes Cline, Scott Swaim, Bryce Deweese, Zach Brown, Tyler Hunt.

Conference: Central Carolina 2-A.

Outlook: With the entire lineup intact from last year, the Golden Eagles hope to challenge Salisbury and West Davidson for the CCC title.

Coach Justin Sink says: “Despite graduating some key players from last year’s team, Coach (Dale) Snyder and the Salisbury program is just so solid I believe they will still be the team to beat in the conference. West Davidson played Salisbury close in conference play last season and I certainly believe they will be back in that spot again to contend for a conference title. What I hope that we will be able to do is keep the pressure on if either Salisbury or West slips up we can throw ourselves into contention as well. That will require consistent play match to match and everyone of our guys to play to their potential each time out.”

North Davidson

Key returnees: Matthew Bibb, Cody Hill, Chris Davis, Austin Hege, Ryan Ferrell, Kody Hutchins.

Key newcomers: Cameron Easter, Preston Ball, Travis Roach.

Conference: Central Piedmont 4-A.

Outlook: The Black Knights must contend with the usually stacked CPC.

Coach Kevin King says: “Conference once again will be loaded. Reagan has probably the best player in Aaron Purviance. Reynolds and (Mount) Tabor are always really good and West Forsyth has won the league the last two years.”
