Lingerfelt's first day goes smoothly

Making the transition from Dale Barnes to Bryan Lingerfelt should be fairly easy for West Davidson’s football program.

After the first official day of practice Thursday, so far, so good.

The Dragons opened practice Thursday morning, and roughly 30 players turned out for the varsity. “It’s going pretty good,” said Lingerfelt, who took the job at West after stepping down at East Davidson in the spring. “Coach Barnes has done a good job, getting things ready here for us.

“I’m happy to be here, and the kids have responded well so far.”

Getting the players to come out and give everything they have is a trademark at West. Even when that doesn’t translate into wins — West won its first three games last season before losing its last seven — the Dragons’ coaches know their players are going to show up every day and work as hard as they can.

That was a calling card for Barnes while he was at West, and the same could be said for Lingerfelt’s teams at East. West has spent plenty of time throughout the spring and summer establishing what it wants to do this season, and this morning’s practice served as a refresher course.

“Today’s practice was a reflection on our offseason, and I thought we did some good things,” Lingerfelt said. “They all had a semblance of what was going on, so I was happy for our kids. We were real happy with how they looked today.

“Pretty much every day (this summer), we were in the weight room, and working on some offensive things.”

Like any team starting a new season, the Dragons are looking for players to step into leadership roles on the field and in the locker room. Lingerfelt said Phoenix Gaddy, Kyle Smith, Tyler Grooms, Zach Queen and Graham Shoaf have all been willing to do whatever is asked of them by the coaching staff.

West will host the NewBridge Bank Jamboree on Aug. 16 at Glosson Stadium. The Dragons open the regular season at Ledford on Aug. 23.
