North Davidson’s girls didn’t roll over Ledford like they did to open the 2013-14 season.

But the Black Knights can win close ones two.

Lauren Ramsey scored 19 points, the Knights were 13-of-16 from the free throw line and played lockdown defense in a 52-49 victory over Ledford on Friday at Pete Jones Gym.

Taylor Darrow scored 14 points for the Knights. Caitlin Mize came off the bench to score eight as North improved to 7-6 and ended Ledford’s eight-game winning streak.

“Free throws, I’ve been able to count on that, us making our free throws,” said North coach Kendra Puckett. “We are a very good free throw shooting team. Defensively, we went to a 1-3-1, which they didn’t see much of the last time we played them. That caused a lot of turnovers.”

Julia Carroll led the Panthers (12-4) with 16 points and Allie Fischer had 12. But leading scorer Courtney Callicutt was held scoreless until hitting a layup with three seconds left.

Ledford started well, leading 8-1, but North quickly turned that around and led by as much as 10 in the second quarter before settling for a 28-22 halftime lead.

The Panthers briefly tied the game at 28-28 in the third quarter.

Taylor Darrow gave North the lead for good at 30-28 with 3:57 left in the third quarter. While the Knights never trailed again, they couldn’t really get comfortable either, as their lead down the stretch grew to no more than five points. And it was down to one at 48-47 with 1:07 left when MacKenzie Cranford hit a driving layup.

But Alicia Hairston hit four straight free throws in the final minute to keep Ledford at bay.

“We knew it was going to be a different game than the last time we played them,” Puckett said. “I knew they had stepped up their game and they won the Christmas tournament.”

North visits Parkland next Friday while Ledford hosts Asheboro.
